Weeds: Pittsburgh (02E12)

So words can’t describe how amazing Weeds is. I’m not even gonna try. I will say that Season 2 made Weeds the most consistently entertaining show on tv. In my opinion it’s better than Lost, Veronica Mars and The Nine combined. So rather than write a review which would just end up with me typing in capitals and squealing like a schoolgirl I’ve picked my favourite quotes/moments from the finale(Spoiler warning for all the Canadians out there):

When Cheese Becomes Legend

I love the Brits. They make me chuckle. They have also made the new Dirty Dancing musical the most popular pre-sold musical in history. First the Spice Girls, now this.

That being said this BBC News article about Dirty Dancing being ‘The Star Wars for girls’ completely resonates with me. I own the special edition 2 disc DVD of the movie and I’m proud of it. I discovered Dirty Dancing on TBS when I was a kid and have been in love ever since. It’s corny, it’s tacky and it’s perfect. You find me a girl who doesn’t know where the line ‘Noboday puts Baby in a corner’ comes from and I’ll be shocked. It’s one of those craptastic 80’s moments that’s up there with anything John Hughes produced. While I wouldn’t say it’s Star Wars for girls(because duh, that’s Star Wars), I’d probably say it’s The Godfather for girls.

The article got me thinking about other delightfully cheesy romances that I can’t resist. I’m incapable of doing a Top 5 because ranking this movies would be much too difficult. Without further ado:

Shut Up and Sing + Nirvana Gone Wrong

Kurt Cobain is rolling over in his grave right about now. Forbes.com is reporting that CSI: Miami has been granted the rights to use four Nirvana songs in an upcoming episode. This depresses me to no end. I don’t know what’s more surprising, that Nirvana is going to be played on such a horrible show or that Nirvana is being mentioned in Forbes.

Even more depressing than Nirvana on CBS is that NBC and The CW have both denied The Weinstein Company ad space to promote Shut Up and Sing. Apparently neither corporation feels it’s appropriate to get money from a studio making a movie that doesn’t sugar coat and praise everything Bush does. Welcome to the land of the free and the home of the brave. It’s scary that Freedom of Speech is becoming an ironic term.

If you haven’t seen Shut Up and Sing I suggest you go check it out. It follows the Dixie Chicks from 2003 to present to show how lead singer Natalie Maines’ comment about Bush effected not only the bands popularity but their relationship with one another. The Dixie Chicks come out of the movie looking like they were the only level heads in a sea full of insanity. Sure Maines can sometimes be very loose lipped(She’s hysterical at moments. Made me love her even more.) but her belief in herself and her refusal that she did anything wrong was so inspirational it made me want to go out and buy tickets to one of their shows.

The damage may be done for the Chicks and their relationship with country music but I don’t really think that’s a bad thing. I think this movie showcases that the past few years of their lives have allowed them to evolve and become the musicians they were meant to be.

The saddest part of the movie was not the utter ignorance displayed by those who boycotted the Chicks music but it was from the Red Cross who refused to accept a million dollar donation from the group. Good to know helping others comes before political gain for a non profit.

Shut Up and Sing is a must see for anyone who believes in the ideals of freedom of speech, even in a society where keeping your mouth shut seems more like the status quo. As a fan of the Dixie Chicks since I saw them at Lilith Fair in Toronto nearly a decade ago I can only hope they’ll continue to do what they do best, entertain.

Notes to Readers(I Still Don’t Believe You Exist)

I just wanted to apologize to anyone who reads this blog for the lack of posting in the past few weeks.  I’ve been trying to write as much and possible but sometimes other things (ie school and job) get in the way.  I love this blog more than words can say and if there is anyone out there who reads this on a regular basis I’d just like to say thanks.  I mean my mom doesn’t even read this on a regular basis.  She still calls the computer ‘that box thing that gets me Lost episodes’.  Oh how she loves her Lost.

I’ve got a bunch of movie reviews to write (The Queen, Little Children, Shut Up and Sing and Death of a President).  Plus I need to write a love song to Weeds because somehow that show took something great and turned it into something too good for audiences.  It really is the most enjoyable and rewarding tv show on the air.  I’ve also become a big Battlestar Galactica fan in recent weeks which is why it now occupies a spot in my header.  As does Gilmore Girls though.  I may have stopped posting about it and frankly watching it, but the show will always have a place in my tv heart.

Until (sometime) tomorrow, byes.

Joan Cusack has a travel show?

How did I not know this?  Apparently the show airs on the Travel Channel and is called Joan Cusack’s Local Flavor. The concept is that Cusack (and sometimes her family) travels all over Europe to learn how to cook from local merchants. Sounds like an awesome gig doesn’t it?

I wish we got this show in Canada. I’ve been a fan of Cusack ever since I saw her cameos in the classic John Hughes movies of the 80s.(The scene where she drinks from the water fountain in Sixteen Candles still cracks me up.) But honestly, who can forget her classic turn in Working Girl, ‘coffee, tea me?’ Never gets old.

If you have access to the Travel Channel give this show a shot. From the clips that I watched online on the official website it seems like a fun and informative cooking/lifestyle show.

More Studio 60…

So if you read this blog on a regular basis you know I have a love/hate relationship with Aaron Sorkin.  I loved West Wing to an obsessive point.  I discovered Sports Night years after it was cancelled but once again fell in love with Sorkin’s words.  Naturally I was excited about Studio 60 when I heard it about it last year when it was still still Studio 7 on the Sunset Strip.  To cut a long story short the show is nothing compared to Sorkin’s previous works.  Robert Bianco of USA Today agrees with pretty much everything I say.

Now for a completley opposing view of myself and Bianco check out my good friend JOPO’s blog at Bite TV.  He had no clue about Studio 60 until I got him an advance copy.  He also thinks it’s the best show on tv.  I think he’s insane.  Read his column and decide for yourself.

Brothers and Sisters: Date Night(S1E05)

Brothers and Sisters really gets better every week.  I feel like I should crack out the tired ‘it’s like wine, gets better with old age’ cliche…wait, I just did.  But yeah, every week it evolves and the characters and actors continue to show just how much of a family the Walker’s really are.

This week Kitty and Jonathan break up(YAY!) for good, Saul goes out with EvilPresidentHolly and Kitty gets humiliated thanks to lots of martinis.  Plus the business Walkers make a decision to sell off the family’s orchards to fight off bankruptcy and Kevin gets a real date with Scotty only to be a broody bitch the entire time.  Honestly, could Scotty be any cuter?  From here on he will be referred to as cute boy in my recaps.  He’s that cute.  It’s all about the dimples.

Technically I guess this was a filler episode but Brothers & Sisters is so well done that their filler episodes are more entertaining than most hours of tv.

Studio 6o on the Sunset Strip: The Wrap Party(S1E06)

Before tonight I was seriously considering dropping Studio 60 from my schedule. It started off great but then disspointed me, continuously. I now think that the show was just taking time to hit its stride. They had to feel things out. Nowhere in this episode was a comedy sketch. That could not make me happier.

Thoroughly entertaining hour of TV. It built on the relationship between Jordan and Harriet and gave Cal actual scenes to act in(yay!). Nate Cordry showed some real acting chops and Lauren Graham had actual dialogue, that was funny. If only I could say that about Gilmore Girls.

This episode was enough to encourage me not to drop the show. It’s not perfect yet but I’m convinced it’s almost there. No live-blog next week as NBC is replacing Studio 60 with Friday Night Lights for a one week trial.

WTF? Moment of the Week

Sometimes tv baffles me.  Today three horrible shows got full season orders from networks.  Shark(CBS), The Game and 7th Heaven(The CW) will make it until May.

This has definately been a weird programming season.  No stand-out hits and the cancellation of quality shows like Kidnapped before they had a chance.

I guess it’s true what they say, never underestimate the laziness and stupidity of the viewing audience.

Now if ABC cancels The Nine, I’m giving up on TV all together.  Sometimes things just don’t make sense.
